Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Gurukul was conceptualized as a project by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board in the year 2002, with the objective of providing to the society qualified and skilled professionals in the field of Sanskrit and Religion.
The Gurukul has been established at Charan Paduka about 1.50 Km. from Katra on the track leading to the Holy Shrine. It is built on a piece of land measuring about 30 Kanals and consists of Modern Classrooms, Student Hostel, Acharyas’ Residence, Dining Hall, Temple, Yagyashalla, Basketball Court, Indoor and Outdoor sporting facilities.
It has been established as a fully residential, totally free of cost institution to impart Vedic / Sanskrit education to the students by giving them lessons in Vedas, ‘Karam Kand’ and Puja rituals, and besides, in modern subjects like English, Maths, Science, Computer etc. The Gurukul also organizes regular free of cost workshops for the Pujaris of the Jammu region, with a view to sharpening their skills in the use of Sanskrit language and for improving their understanding of the rituals / religious practices.
The Gurukul was formally inaugurated by the Chairman, Governing Council for the Gurukul on 1st July, 2010 and teaching in Gurukul formally started with the admission of 30 students to (Class 6th). The students admitted to the Gurukul are provided free boarding & loading, teaching, accommodation, books, uniforms etc.
The Governing Council has decided to admit 30 students per year in (Class 6th) through an entrance examination and these students will get promoted to higher classes in due course of time.
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Gurukul has been granted permanent recognition / affiliation by Central Sanskrit University, New Delhi (the first Sanskrit University of the Country) upto Acharya (Post Graduation) Level. As of now Gurukul is providing education upto Shastri (Graduation) Level. The Annual Examinations for Class 6th & 7th are conducted in-house, whereas the exams for Class 8th and onwards are conducted by Central Sanskrit University, New Delhi. The traditional and modern subjects are being taught in the Gurukul.
In view of the future intake of students to classes beyond Class 12th and consequent increase in the staff to be posted to Gurukul, there was a felt need of additional accommodation for both the students and the staff. Accordingly a piece of Shrine Board’s land measuring about 12 Kanal was identified near the existing complex. This land was inspected by the Members of the Governing Council and found suitable for the proposed Phase-II Project. The work of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Gurukul Phase-II which comprises a Hostel Block, residential accommodation for teachers, Temple and a Yagyashalla was started in November, 2014 and was completed in August, 2017
Hon’ble Chairman, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (Hon’ble Governor, J&K State) inaugurated Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Gurukul Phase-II in the presence of Members of Governing Council, SMVD Gurukul and Jammu based Board Members of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board on 17.10.2017 for the students of Shastri Classes.
The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Gurukul Phase – II has been mandated to function upto Graduation level (Shastri) from the year in the month of August, 2017. Shastri Classes have been started with 10 students. As decided by the Governing Council there shall be only 10 seats available in each year of Graduation (Shastri) class.
